Expired Domain

A previously registered domain that became available again after non-renewal.

Some SEOs acquire expired domains with strong backlink profiles for rebranding or 301 redirecting to a target site. The tactic carries significant risks: previous spam, mismatched topical relevance and Google's detection of site purpose changes can negate or reverse benefits. Modern Google often disregards links from changed-purpose expired domains.
