Heading structure in Wix

One H1 per page: every page needs exactly one H1 that describes its main topic. In Wix, the page title strip usually generates the H1. Check in the text editor toolbar that your main heading uses the "Heading 1" style rather than a paragraph with large font size.

Wix heading styles: in the Wix editor, the text styles "Heading 1" through "Heading 6" map directly to HTML H1 through H6 tags. Select any text element and check the style dropdown to see which heading level it uses. Changing the visual size does not change the HTML tag.

Consecutive levels: use heading levels in order. Do not skip from H2 to H4. Each sub-section should be one level deeper than its parent, creating a clear content outline that both search engines and screen readers can follow.

Common mistakes: using heading styles purely for visual sizing is the most frequent problem. If you want large text that is not a section heading, use a paragraph with custom font size rather than an H tag. Another common issue is placing decorative text in H2 or H3 tags when it serves no structural purpose.

Why heading hierarchy matters for SEO

Search engines use headings to understand the structure and topics on a page. A clear hierarchy with one H1 and properly nested H2s and H3s helps Google identify what the page is about and which sections are most important. It also improves accessibility for screen reader users who navigate by heading level.

Pages with a clean heading structure tend to perform better in featured snippets and passage-based ranking, because Google can isolate individual sections as answers to specific queries.
