RankBrain

A machine learning system Google uses to interpret search queries.

RankBrain, launched in 2015, processes ambiguous and rare queries using machine learning to identify connections between query terms and concepts. It was Google's first major application of ML to search ranking. Subsequent systems like BERT (2019) and MUM (2021) extended ML's role to understanding language nuance, multimodal content and complex queries.
