Wix SEO variables system: dynamic meta tags and title patterns at scale
Module 4: On-Page SEO Optimisation for Wix | Lesson 46 of 687 | 32 min read

The Wix SEO variables system is one of the most powerful features on the platform — and one of the most underused. Variables let you create meta title and description templates that auto-populate from your page data, making it possible to optimise hundreds of pages simultaneously without editing each one individually.
What Wix SEO Variables Are
SEO variables are dynamic placeholders in your title tag and meta description patterns that Wix replaces with real content from your page data when the page is served. For example, a blog post title variable {post_title} automatically populates with the actual post title for each blog article. This means you write one template and every post gets a unique, accurate meta tag.
Every Variable Available in Wix
- {title} — the page title as entered in the editor
- {post_title} — for Wix Blog posts
- {category_name} — for blog category pages
- {tag_name} — for blog tag pages
- {product_name} — for Wix Stores product pages
- {collection_name} — for Wix Stores category pages
- {location_name} — for Wix Bookings location pages
- {service_name} — for Wix Bookings service pages
- {site_name} — your business name as entered in Wix settings
- Custom variables from Wix database collection fields via Velo
Using SEO Patterns to Apply Variable Templates
Setting up SEO Patterns in Wix
- In Wix Dashboard, go to Marketing & SEO > SEO > SEO Patterns
- Select the page type to configure (Blog Posts, Products, Categories, etc.)
- Click the Title field and use {variable} placeholders to build your template
- Preview the populated title using a real page example shown below the field
- Set the meta description template in the same way
- Save — the pattern applies immediately to all pages of that type
When to Override Patterns with Manual Meta Tags
SEO Patterns are ideal for pages where the formula is consistent — blog posts, product pages, service pages. But for your highest-value pages (homepage, main service pages, top landing pages), manual meta tags almost always outperform automated patterns. The pattern produces a correct meta tag; a manually written one can be crafted for maximum click-through appeal. Override Patterns for your top 10-20 pages.
How to Configure SEO Patterns with Variables in Wix
How to set up Wix SEO Patterns to auto-generate title tags and meta descriptions at scale
- Log in to your Wix Dashboard and navigate to Marketing & SEO > SEO Settings.
- In the SEO Settings panel, select the page type you want to configure first — Blog Posts is usually the highest priority for sites with many articles.
- Click the Title field and clear any existing content. Type the structure you want, for example: {post_title} | {site_name}.
- Click the Insert Variable button or type the variable name directly using the {variable_name} format. Available variables for Blog Posts include {post_title}, {category_name}, and {site_name}.
- Below the template field, Wix will show a live preview using a real blog post from your site. Review the preview to confirm the populated title is accurate and within 60-65 characters.
- Click the Meta Description field and build your template. For blog posts, a useful pattern is: {post_title} - Read the full guide on {site_name}. Adjust to include the keyword context relevant to your niche.
- Review the meta description preview to ensure the populated text is 150-160 characters and reads naturally.
- Click Save to apply the pattern to all Blog Posts pages immediately.
- Repeat the process for each other page type: Products, Categories, Bookings Services, and any other dynamic page types used on your Wix site.
- After saving all patterns, spot-check 10 individual pages across each type by visiting the live pages and using a browser extension like SEO Meta in 1 Click to verify the populated title tags and meta descriptions are appearing correctly.
