The State of Wix SEO 2026

GSC-verified before-and-after results from 12 of my client projects, the mistakes I fix most often and the methods that keep working. Every result figure comes from Google Search Console.

I work with Wix businesses across the UK, US, Canada, Australia and worldwide.

Methodology

This report is built on one data source: before-and-after Google Search Console data from 12 client Wix sites across e-commerce, healthcare, professional services, events and more. Caveats are stated honestly throughout: some comparisons are year-on-year, one was measured in its seasonal off-period, and one healthcare site reflects search visibility only. The mistakes and methods sections are my own experience from 14 years of Wix SEO work, not a statistical study.

Part 1: The 10 most common Wix SEO mistakes

1. Not going beyond default structured data (High impact): Wix adds basic structured data automatically, but most site owners never extend it with LocalBusiness, FAQ, HowTo or Review schema, missing out on rich results and AI citations. 2. Duplicate city/location pages (High impact): Copy-pasted location pages with only the city name changed, which Google treats as duplicate content. 3. Unoptimised hero images (High impact): Large uncompressed images are the primary cause of LCP failure; the fix (WebP, proper dimensions, fetchpriority) takes minutes. 4. Google Search Console missing or misconfigured (High impact): Many owners never connected it, or never resolved its indexation errors. 5. Keyword cannibalisation (Medium impact): Multiple pages targeting the same primary term fragment the ranking signal. A Wix-specific trap: Wix auto-creates indexable blog tag/category pages that cannibalise the posts themselves. 6. Internal linking that ignores priority pages (Medium impact): High-value service pages often get fewer internal links than blog posts, diluting their authority. 7. Auto-generated meta titles (Medium impact): Wix defaults meta titles to the page name ("Services - Business Name"), non-descriptive and non-targeted. 8. Third-party app overload (High impact): Chat widgets, pop-ups, pixels and review apps each add JavaScript, and the cumulative effect on INP is severe. 9. No content strategy beyond the homepage (Medium impact): Most Wix sites invest in the homepage but build no topical authority. 10. GA4 not tracking conversions (Medium impact): Most sites track only page views, not the actions that matter.

Part 2: What actually works

1. Retrievability first: Get content and schema into the served HTML. This is the foundation most people skip. Wix renders much of a page with JavaScript, and some AI crawlers and retrieval systems don't fully execute JavaScript. Confirm your content, meta tags and structured data are present in the raw HTML the server sends, not only after hydration. Test it bluntly: fetch the page as plain HTML and read what comes back. If your answer content and JSON-LD are missing, fix that first. Nothing else matters until it's solved. Because so few Wix sites address this, the bar to stand out is low. 2. Comprehensive structured data. Wix adds basic schema automatically, which is a good start - but going beyond defaults with rich, specific markup is what earns rich results and AI citations. Language models cite entities they can parse, and extending your structured data makes your business a machine-readable entity they can name. 3. Core Web Vitals: Big improvements are achievable. Most Wix sites I work on can move from failing to passing Core Web Vitals, mainly by fixing hero images, cutting third-party apps and setting image dimensions so the layout does not shift. 4. Local SEO: GBP and reviews: Now outweigh domain authority. For local businesses, an optimised Google Business Profile with a steady flow of genuine reviews often does more for Local Pack rankings than domain authority, and complete LocalBusiness schema backs it up. 5. Fix cannibalisation and internal linking: Consolidate and redirect authority. Consolidate pages competing for the same term, and ensure your high-value service and conversion pages receive the internal links they deserve rather than letting blog posts absorb the authority.

Part 3: The 2026 shift: AI search (GEO & AEO)

The biggest change in 2026 isn't within Google - it's the rise of AI answers. Search has split in two: there's the classic blue-link results page, and there's the answer an AI gives when someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot or Google's AI Overviews directly. For a growing share of potential clients, the AI answer is the only result they ever see. Wix gives you the tools to be visible in both - but most owners haven't set up for AI search yet, which is a wide-open opportunity. Classic SEO asks "will this rank?" GEO and AEO ask a harder question: "if an AI answers this instead of showing a list, will the answer be mine, and will it credit me?"

The five things that get a Wix site cited by AI

1. Retrievability : content and schema in the served HTML, not only after JS hydration. 2. Structured data the AI can trust: a dual-layer approach: one layer for Google rich results, one defining your business as a machine-readable entity with disambiguated identity and answer-ready Q&A pairs. 3. An llms.txt file: a plain-text site summary for LLMs. 4. Content shaped like an answer: lead with the direct response; write so a single paragraph could be quoted as the whole answer and still make sense out of context. 5. Entity consistency and off-domain corroboration: the same facts everywhere, plus third-party mentions.

How to measure it

GEO has no single rank number. You test it : take the questions a client would ask, put them to ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews, and note three things: are you mentioned, are you cited as a source with a link, and is what the engine says about you accurate.

Part 4: Real client results

These are the results. All figures from Google Search Console. Aggregate clicks +35%. Aggregate impressions +35%. Clients that grew: 11 of 12. Median click growth +41%. Average position gain ~6.3 places. Terms on page 1: 500+.

Tim Biggs: Cosmetic / rhinoplasty surgery (UK)

Clicks +71% (1,154 to 1,976), impressions +50% (91,480 to 136,946), 203 search terms onto page 1. "best rhinoplasty surgeon uk" climbed from position 54 to 10; "blocked nose at night" now brings 122 clicks at position 5.7; ranks #1 for "anterior nasal valve collapse" and "revision rhinoplasty surgeon". A fiercely competitive medical niche, with visibility built across the full patient journey.

Tongue-Tie.info: Clinical healthcare (UK)

211 high-intent clinical terms reached page 1. "tongue tied operation" from position 45 to 1; "treatment for tongue tie" from 77 to 8; "frenulotomy" from 58.5 to 9.4; "tongue tie in newborns" from 48.7 to 3. Being on page 1 for the exact terms patients search is what generates enquiries.

Fresh Supply: E-commerce (Ireland)

Clicks +122% (1,250 to 2,780), impressions +42%, average position improved from 27.5 to 16.1 (over 11 places). CTR from 1.8% to 2.8%. Year-on-year comparison; part of the change may reflect factors beyond the SEO work.

Update: Business systems / ERP (Sweden)

Clicks +98% (45 to 89). "exflow" from 6.45 to 4.39; "business central boras" from 13.17 to 7.77 (page 2 to page 1); "update it" from 3.5 to 1.33.

Vet To You: Veterinary services (UK)

Clicks +80% (438 to 791), impressions +155% (8,950 to 22,800). Average position from 17.9 to 15.5.

Emerald Event Hire: Events (UK)

91 search terms climbed onto page 1. "champagne wall hire" from 11.5 to 4.47; "proposal set up near me" from 14.33 to 2.38; "prop hire near me" from 21 to 3. Measured through the seasonal off-period. Top-line clicks were down 8% as expected, but rankings were built in the quiet season, positioning the business for when demand peaks.

Every sector tested

These results span cosmetic surgery, clinical healthcare, e-commerce (UK and Ireland), ERP software, veterinary services, wellbeing, regenerative medicine, and events . Every sector tested. There is no niche in this portfolio where Wix SEO "doesn't work." The platform is not the variable; the quality of the SEO is.

Part 5: Conclusion

Wix is a genuinely capable SEO platform. The myth that "you can't do SEO on Wix" is not supported by a single site in this research. Wix websites absolutely can and do rank on page 1 for competitive keywords when properly optimised. The platform gives you a strong foundation; the opportunity is that most owners haven't yet maximised it. Most Wix sites I see have plenty of untapped potential, and the client results show what capturing it delivers: around a third more clicks and impressions, and hundreds of terms onto page 1. In 2026, the frontier is AI search. The same foundations - retrievable HTML, trustworthy structured data, answer-shaped content, entity consistency - that win in Google now also decide whether an AI names you. Most Wix sites haven't tapped into this yet, which is precisely the opportunity.
