Advanced internal linking: pillar-cluster architecture for Wix
Module 4: On-Page SEO Optimisation for Wix | Lesson 46 of 688 | 28 min read
By Michael Andrews, Wix SEO Expert UK
Moving beyond basic internal linking to a deliberate pillar-cluster architecture concentrates PageRank on your most important pages and builds topical authority signals that lift entire topic clusters. This lesson shows you how to audit your current link structure, identify gaps, and implement a systematic linking plan across your Wix site.
Why Pillar-Cluster Architecture Outperforms Random Linking
A random internal linking strategy distributes PageRank evenly across all pages, which means no single page accumulates enough authority to compete for competitive keywords. A deliberate pillar-cluster architecture funnels PageRank toward your most commercially important pillar pages, while cluster articles benefit from the topical coherence of the group.
Auditing Your Current Internal Link Structure
Running an internal link audit on Wix with Screaming Frog
- Crawl your Wix site with Screaming Frog (free for up to 500 URLs)
- Export the Inlinks report to see how many pages link to each URL
- Identify pages with zero internal links (orphan pages) — these receive no PageRank
- Identify your most linked-to pages — these currently receive the most PageRank
- Compare the most linked-to pages against your commercially most important pages
- If the lists do not match, your link structure is not aligned with your business goals
Implementing the Pillar-Cluster Plan on Wix
- Identify your 5-8 most important pillar pages (service pages, core blog hubs, landing pages)
- Ensure every cluster article links to its pillar with keyword-rich anchor text
- Add contextual links from pillar pages to every cluster article
- Link cluster articles horizontally to closely related cluster articles
- Add links to pillar pages from your homepage and main navigation where appropriate
- Rebuild internal links to orphan pages from the most relevant existing content
Measuring the Impact of Architecture Changes
After implementing your pillar-cluster linking changes, allow 4-6 weeks for Google to recrawl and reindex the updated link graph. Then compare ranking positions for your pillar page target keywords in GSC. Look for uplift in the pillar pages specifically, and also watch for broader cluster improvements as topical coherence strengthens.
How to Add Internal Links Between Pages in the Wix Editor
How to create internal links on your Wix site to build a pillar-cluster architecture
- Open the Wix Editor and navigate to the cluster article you want to link from.
- Identify a sentence or phrase in the content where a link to the pillar page would add context and value for the reader — ideally a phrase containing the pillar page's target keyword.
- Highlight the anchor text by clicking and dragging over it in the Wix Editor text element.
- Click the link icon in the Wix text toolbar that appears above the selected text.
- In the link panel, select Page from the link type options, then choose the pillar page from the page dropdown list.
- Confirm the link is set to open in the same tab for internal links (not a new tab, which is better suited to external links).
- Click Done to apply the link, then repeat for any other relevant phrases in the article that should link to the pillar or to related cluster articles.
- Navigate to the pillar page in the Wix Editor and add a contextual link back to the cluster article from a relevant phrase, ensuring the pillar page also participates in the linking structure.
- After completing all linking changes, publish the updated pages.
- In Google Search Console, use URL Inspection on your pillar pages and request indexing to prompt faster recrawling of the updated link graph.
