Wix Stores has released an updated version of product category pages that includes dedicated SEO settings for each category. Previously, category pages had limited SEO controls, making it difficult to optimise them for search. The new system gives you full control over meta titles, descriptions, URLs, and structured data at the category level. This is a significant change for eCommerce SEO on Wix, as category pages are often among the highest-traffic pages on an online store.
What Changed with the New Category Pages
The updated category system treats each category as a fully independent page with its own URL, SEO settings, and content area. Previously, categories were more like filters that grouped products without their own indexable pages. Now, each category page can rank independently in Google for broad product keywords, making them essential landing pages for your eCommerce SEO strategy.
Configuring SEO Settings for Each Category
Complete SEO setup for new Wix Store categories
- Navigate to Wix Stores in your dashboard and open the Categories section.
- Select a category and look for the SEO Settings tab. This is where all the new controls live.
- Set a unique, keyword-rich meta title for the category. Include the category name and a compelling modifier (e.g., "Shop Handmade Candles | Free UK Delivery | Your Store Name").
- Write a unique meta description that describes what the category contains and includes a clear call to action.
- Customise the URL slug to be short, descriptive, and keyword-rich. Remove auto-generated numbers or random characters.
- Add category description content above and below the product grid. This is critical for ranking, as Google needs text content to understand what the category is about.
- Configure the Open Graph image and description for social media sharing.
- Review the auto-generated structured data and ensure the category is marked with appropriate CollectionPage or ProductCollection schema.
Writing Effective Category Page Content
The biggest opportunity with the new category system is adding substantive content to each category page. Most eCommerce sites have category pages that are just a grid of products with no supporting text. Adding a well-written introduction paragraph, buying guide information, and relevant FAQs can dramatically improve ranking potential.
- Write 150-300 words of introductory text above the product grid explaining what the category includes and who it is for
- Add a buying guide or selection tips section below the product grid to help shoppers make decisions
- Include 3-5 relevant FAQs with FAQ schema markup for potential featured snippets
- Use the category description to naturally include your target keyword and related terms
- Link to related categories and top-selling products within the description text
How to Write and Add Category Description Content in Wix Stores
How to add and format unique description content to a Wix Stores category page to improve its ranking potential
- Log in to your Wix dashboard at manage.wix.com and navigate to Wix Stores, then select Categories from the left menu.
- Click on the category you want to optimise and open its settings panel.
- Find the Category Description field and click into it. If a rich text editor is available, use it to add formatted content; otherwise paste plain text.
- Write an introductory paragraph of 150 to 200 words that explains what the category contains, who it is for, and what makes your selection different. Include your target keyword in the first sentence naturally.
- Below the introduction, add a section titled Buying Guide with three to five bullet points giving practical selection advice relevant to that product type. This gives the page content that helps shoppers and signals expertise to search engines.
- Add an FAQ section with three common questions shoppers ask about products in that category. Write a two to three sentence answer for each question.
- Add internal links within the description text to your top three selling products in that category and to one related category page.
- Review the description once more to confirm it reads naturally for a human visitor and does not repeat the category keyword more than three times across the full text.
- Save the category and publish the change. Then open the page in a browser and use the Wix SEO Assistant to confirm the description text has been indexed and no title or meta issues exist.
- Submit the category URL to Google Search Console via the URL Inspection tool and click Request Indexing to prompt Google to crawl the updated content.
