Wix Stores category page architecture: the 2024 update explained
Module 17: Wix eCommerce SEO Mastery | Lesson 208 of 687 | 26 min read
By Michael Andrews, Wix SEO Expert UK
Wix completely redesigned the Stores category page system in 2024, introducing dedicated SEO settings, improved URL structure control and richer category content options. If you built your store before 2024, your category pages may still be using the old architecture. This lesson explains the differences and how to migrate.
What Changed in the 2024 Category Page Update
- Dedicated SEO settings panel for each category (previously shared with collections)
- Category-specific URL slugs with sub-category nesting support
- Rich content fields: category description, banner image and SEO-focused headings
- Breadcrumb schema generated automatically from category hierarchy
- CollectionPage schema applied automatically to category listing pages
- Improved filtering URL handling to reduce duplicate content from filter parameters
Configuring SEO Settings for Each Category
Setting up new category page SEO in Wix Stores
- Navigate to Wix Dashboard > Stores > Categories
- Select a category and click SEO Settings in the category management panel
- Write a unique, keyword-rich meta title for the category (60-65 characters)
- Write a compelling meta description including category keyword and value proposition
- Set the URL slug to match your primary keyword for the category
- Add category description text (150-300 words) using the rich content editor
Category Hierarchy and Internal Linking
The 2024 update introduced subcategory URL nesting: a subcategory URL now appears as /shop/parent-category/sub-category rather than /shop/sub-category. This hierarchy is reflected in automatically generated BreadcrumbList schema, which helps Google understand your product taxonomy. Ensure your primary navigation links to parent categories, and that parent category pages link to all subcategories with descriptive anchor text.
