By Michael Andrews, Wix SEO Expert UK

Wix completely redesigned the Stores category page system in 2024, introducing dedicated SEO settings, improved URL structure control and richer category content options. If you built your store before 2024, your category pages may still be using the old architecture. This lesson explains the differences and how to migrate.

Category Hierarchy and Internal Linking

The 2024 update introduced subcategory URL nesting: a subcategory URL now appears as /shop/parent-category/sub-category rather than /shop/sub-category. This hierarchy is reflected in automatically generated BreadcrumbList schema, which helps Google understand your product taxonomy. Ensure your primary navigation links to parent categories, and that parent category pages link to all subcategories with descriptive anchor text.

Migration: If you change existing category URL slugs as part of migrating to the new system, set up 301 redirects from the old URLs before publishing the changes. Use the Wix 301 redirect manager (Settings > Custom Redirects) to prevent ranking drops from changed category URLs.
