Google Shopping free listings give Wix eCommerce stores visibility in Google Shopping results without paying for ads. Combined with Performance Max campaigns, this creates a powerful organic-plus-paid strategy. This lesson covers setup, optimisation and maximising your product visibility.
How Google Shopping Free Listings Work
Since 2020, Google has offered free product listings in the Shopping tab of search results. These organic product listings appear based on product data quality, relevance to the search query and your overall site authority. For Wix eCommerce stores, this means your products can appear in Google Shopping without any ad spend.

Setting Up Google Merchant Center for Wix
Connecting your Wix store to Google Merchant Center
- Create a Google Merchant Center account at merchants.google.com
- Verify and claim your Wix website URL
- Connect your Wix store using the Google Merchant Center integration in Wix
- Configure your product feed settings including shipping and tax information
- Enable free product listings in Merchant Center under Growth > Manage programs
- Submit your product feed and resolve any disapprovals or warnings
- Monitor the Diagnostics tab for product data quality issues
Optimising Product Data for Free Listings
- Product titles: include brand, product type, key attributes (colour, size, material)
- Descriptions: 500-1000 characters with natural keyword inclusion
- Images: high-quality, white background, minimum 800x800 pixels
- Product categories: use Google product taxonomy for accurate categorisation
- GTINs/barcodes: include wherever possible for better matching
- Price: ensure Wix price matches Google Merchant Center exactly
- Availability: keep stock status accurate and updated in real time
Performance Max Integration
Performance Max campaigns use your product feed to serve ads across Google Search, Shopping, Display, YouTube, Discover and Gmail. While this is paid advertising, the product data optimisation you do for free listings directly improves your Performance Max results. Better product data means lower cost per click and higher conversion rates.
How to optimise Wix product pages for better Google Shopping free listing rankings
- Navigate to Dashboard > Store > Products in your Wix account and open a product you want to optimise.
- Click the SEO tab in the product editor and set the SEO title to follow the pattern: Brand + Product Type + Key Attribute (e.g., colour or size).
- Write the meta description as a single persuasive sentence that includes the product category and a key differentiator.
- Scroll to the product images section and upload a minimum of one image at 800 by 800 pixels or larger with a plain white background.
- Add descriptive alt text to each product image including the product name and primary attribute.
- Return to the main product details and ensure the product description is at least 300 words covering materials, dimensions, use cases and benefits.
- Enter the product GTIN or barcode in the appropriate field if available, as this improves Google Shopping matching accuracy.
- Set the product category using Google's taxonomy terms by editing the relevant field in the product details panel.
- Publish the product, then open your Google Merchant Center Diagnostics tab to check for any disapprovals or data quality warnings for that product.
- Resolve any flagged issues (price mismatch, missing attributes, image quality) and resubmit the product feed.
Measuring Free Listing Performance
Monitor free listing performance in Google Merchant Center under Performance > Free listings. Track impressions, clicks and click-through rate. Compare this against your paid Shopping performance to understand the incremental value of organic product visibility.
