Wix Multilingual: Localise URL Slugs per Language

By default, a translated page on a Wix multilingual site keeps the original language's URL slug. If you have an English page at /best-plumber-london, the French translation would appear at /fr/best-plumber-london, even though the page content is entirely in French. Wix now lets you rewrite that slug in each language, so the French page can sit at /fr/meilleur-plombier-londres instead.

The SEO value is straightforward. Search engines and users in each market see a URL in their own language, which reads better in results and reinforces the page's language and relevance signals. It is a small change that tidies up your international URLs and supports the hreflang and multilingual setup you have already built. It does not replace any of that work, but it is an easy win on top of it.

Why Localise the Slug

A URL in the reader's own language is clearer in the search result, matches the page content, and looks trustworthy to someone searching in that language. Leaving every translated page on the original English slug is a missed signal: Google can read the slug and uses it as one of many cues about page language and content. This does not replace proper multilingual setup — correct language structure and hreflang still matter most — but it is an easy win on top of them. Think of it as the same reason you translate the title tag and meta description: the slug is part of the visible result too.

How to Localise a Page's Slug

• Open your site in the editor.
• Click the "Switch languages" dropdown at the top and select your secondary language.
• Click "Pages & Menu" on the left.
• Click the "More Actions" icon next to the page you want to change.
• Click "SEO basics".
• Edit the "URL slug" field to the word or phrase you want in that language.
• Check that "Let search engines index this page" stays enabled.
• Click "Publish" at the top right.

What Happens on Publish

Once you publish, Wix automatically creates a redirect from the old slug to the new one, so any existing links or indexed URLs are not left broken. Visitors and crawlers following the old URL will be sent to the updated one. Repeat the steps above for each page and each language you want to localise. There is no bulk tool for this — each page's slug is set individually in SEO basics for each language.
