Country targeting in Google Search Console for Wix sites
Module 56: Wix Multilingual SEO: International & Translated Sites | Lesson 613 of 688 | 22 min read
By Michael Andrews, Wix SEO Expert UK
Google Search Console has a dedicated International Targeting section that lets you set a country target for your site and see hreflang errors across your multilingual Wix setup. This is one of the most important verification steps after launching a multilingual site — and one of the most overlooked.
Finding the International Targeting Report in GSC
Accessing international targeting in Search Console
- Log into Google Search Console at search.google.com/search-console and select your Wix site property.
- In the left sidebar, scroll down past the main navigation sections to find "Legacy tools and reports".
- Click on "International Targeting" to open the report.
- You will see two tabs at the top: Language and Country — start with the Language tab.
- The Language tab shows your hreflang implementation status and lists any errors Google has detected.
- The Country tab lets you set a geographic target signal if your site uses a generic top-level domain (.com, .net) instead of a country-code domain.
- In the Performance report, click "Add filter" then "Country" to see impressions and clicks broken down by country.
- Compare organic performance across each target market to identify which language versions are gaining traction.
- Use the URL Inspection tool to check individual translated pages and confirm their hreflang alternate tags are being read correctly by Google.
Reading the Hreflang Error Report
- No return tags error: your target page references another language but that page does not reference back
- Unknown language tag: you have used an invalid ISO language code
- No default locale: no x-default tag is present across your hreflang set
- URL not indexed: a hreflang reference points to a URL that is not indexed in Google
- Multiple hreflang specified: conflicting hreflang values on the same page
Using the Performance Report for International Traffic Analysis
In the Performance section of GSC, you can filter by country to see how each language version of your Wix site is performing. Add a Country dimension to the report and compare impressions, clicks and CTR across each market. This data tells you which language versions are gaining traction and which need more content or backlink investment to rank.
How to Configure Country Targeting in Google Search Console for Wix
Setting up country targeting in Google Search Console helps signal geographic intent to Google and lets you monitor international performance data for each language version of your Wix site.
How to configure and use country targeting settings in Google Search Console for your Wix site
- Log into Google Search Console at search.google.com/search-console and select your Wix site property from the property selector.
- In the left navigation sidebar, scroll past the core reports to find "Legacy tools and reports" and click to expand it.
- Click "International Targeting" to open the report with its Language and Country tabs.
- Click the Country tab first — if your site uses a generic TLD (.com, .org), you can optionally set a target country here to signal geographic preference to Google.
- Note that setting a country target in GSC is a soft signal only — it does not replace proper hreflang implementation for multilingual sites.
- Click the Language tab to view the hreflang error report — review each error listed and note the affected page URLs.
- Return to the main Performance report in Search Console and click "Add filter" at the top of the chart area.
- Select "Country" from the filter options and choose your first target market to isolate that country's impressions and clicks data.
- Compare average position, CTR, and click volume across each target market by switching the country filter to each language region.
- Identify which translated language versions are underperforming relative to expected traffic and prioritise those for content and metadata improvement.
- Schedule a monthly review of this data to track whether each international language version is growing its share of organic impressions.
