Translating metadata: titles, descriptions and alt text across languages

When you translate your Wix site content, translating the visible page text is just the beginning. Every piece of SEO metadata must also be translated and, more importantly, keyword-optimised for the target language market. A French translation of an English title tag is rarely sufficient — the target keywords may be completely different phrases in French. This lesson covers a systematic approach to translating and optimising all metadata across your Wix multilingual site.

Accessing Translated Metadata in Wix Multilingual

In the Wix Editor, switch your active language using the language selector at the top of the screen. Once in your target language, access the SEO panel for each page to update the translated title tag and meta description. The Wix Multilingual translation editor also allows bulk editing of metadata across pages if you prefer a spreadsheet-like interface.

The Metadata Translation Checklist

Title tags: research keywords in the target language before writing, do not just translate the English title
Meta descriptions: adapt the value proposition for the target market, tone may differ between cultures
Image alt text: translate all alt attributes and use target-language keywords where relevant
Structured data: update the inLanguage property and any text content in schema markup
Open Graph tags: translate og:title and og:description for social sharing in the target language
URL slugs: edit translated slugs to use target-language keywords rather than translated English words

Do Not Auto-Translate Metadata: Using Google Translate to produce metadata for multilingual pages consistently underperforms native copywriting. Machine-translated title tags miss the natural phrasing that target-language users actually search for. Budget for a native speaker to write or review all SEO metadata in each target language.

Structured Data Note: If you have JSON-LD structured data using text content (such as business description or service names), you need separate schema markup for each language version. The inLanguage property in schema should reflect the language of each page variant.
