Translating metadata: titles, descriptions and alt text across languages
Module 56: Wix Multilingual SEO: International & Translated Sites | Lesson 610 of 688 | 28 min read

When you translate your Wix site content, translating the visible page text is just the beginning. Every piece of SEO metadata must also be translated and, more importantly, keyword-optimised for the target language market. A French translation of an English title tag is rarely sufficient — the target keywords may be completely different phrases in French. This lesson covers a systematic approach to translating and optimising all metadata across your Wix multilingual site.
Accessing Translated Metadata in Wix Multilingual
In the Wix Editor, switch your active language using the language selector at the top of the screen. Once in your target language, access the SEO panel for each page to update the translated title tag and meta description. The Wix Multilingual translation editor also allows bulk editing of metadata across pages if you prefer a spreadsheet-like interface.
The Metadata Translation Checklist
- Title tags: research keywords in the target language before writing, do not just translate the English title
- Meta descriptions: adapt the value proposition for the target market, tone may differ between cultures
- Image alt text: translate all alt attributes and use target-language keywords where relevant
- Structured data: update the inLanguage property and any text content in schema markup
- Open Graph tags: translate og:title and og:description for social sharing in the target language
- URL slugs: edit translated slugs to use target-language keywords rather than translated English words
Step-by-step: How to translate and optimise metadata across your Wix multilingual site
- Open the Wix Editor and use the language selector at the top of the screen to switch to your first secondary language.
- Click on the first page you want to update and open the SEO panel on the left-hand side.
- Update the title tag field with a keyword-researched title in the target language — do not simply translate the English title.
- Update the meta description field with a native-language value proposition tailored for the target market audience.
- Close the SEO panel and click on each image on the page to update the alt text in the target language with relevant keywords.
- Repeat this process for every key page: homepage, service pages, about page, and top blog posts.
- In the Wix Multilingual translation editor (Dashboard > Settings > Multilingual > Manage Translations), review the bulk translation view to spot any pages where metadata has been left untranslated.
- If you have structured data on any pages, update the inLanguage property and any text content fields to reflect the current language variant.
- Publish all changes and then inspect translated pages in Google Search Console using the URL Inspection tool to confirm metadata is rendering correctly.
How to Translate and Optimise Meta Tags for Each Language on Wix
A systematic language-by-language metadata audit ensures no SEO fields are left in the wrong language before you seek international rankings.
How to audit and update all SEO metadata fields for every language on your Wix site
- Open Wix Dashboard > Language & Region > Languages and confirm all active languages are published and accessible.
- Open the Wix Editor and switch to the first secondary language using the language dropdown at the top of the screen.
- Navigate to your homepage, open the SEO panel, and check whether the title tag and meta description have been written in the target language with native keywords.
- If metadata is in English or machine-translated, update the title tag using keyword research specific to the target market — use Google Keyword Planner set to the target country.
- Update the meta description with a native-language sentence that reflects the value proposition for that specific market audience.
- Click each image on the homepage and update the alt text field in the target language using relevant descriptive keywords.
- Proceed through every key page: main service pages, about, contact, and the top five most-visited pages from your Google Analytics data.
- In Wix Dashboard > Language & Region > Manage Translations, use the bulk translation view to identify any metadata fields still showing primary language content.
- For pages with structured data, check that the inLanguage property reflects the current language and that all text properties in the schema are in the target language.
- After completing each language, publish the changes and run URL Inspection in Google Search Console on three sample translated pages to confirm metadata renders correctly.
- Repeat the full process for each additional language — never assume one language audit covers another.
