The practices I use every day on Wix, in the order I would tackle them. Not a tick list and not theory, just what actually works in 2026.

I have worked only with Wix for 14 years, and in that time the basics of ranking a Wix site have not really changed, even as the tools around them have. What has changed is how much of your visibility now comes from AI answers as well as classic search. This page is my honest, current view of what actually works on Wix in 2026, the practices I use every day, in the order I would tackle them. It is not a tick list and it is not theory. If you want the step by step, I link to my full checklist and guide at the end.

Start with a search-friendly structure

Google and AI engines both reward a site they can understand quickly. Keep your Wix pages in a shallow, logical order, one clear job per page, and give every page a clean, readable URL slug in the Wix SEO panel rather than the default. Do not chase keywords with lots of thin, near-identical pages, because Wix sites that spread the same intent across several weak pages end up competing with themselves. One strong page beats five thin ones every time.

Write titles and descriptions that earn the click

Every page needs its own title tag and meta description, set in the Wix SEO panel, never left on the Wix default. Keep titles under 60 characters and descriptions under 155 so Google does not cut them off. Lead with what the page is actually about and the words a real person would type, not a stack of keywords. The description does not change your ranking directly, but a clear one earns more clicks, and clicks matter.

Get your headings right

Use one H1 per page that says plainly what the page is about, then H2s and H3s that break the content into a sensible order. In the Wix editor this means using the real heading styles, not just making text big and bold, because the style is what tells Google the structure. Good headings help readers skim and help AI engines pull the right answer from your page.

Make the content genuinely useful and first-hand

This is the biggest lever in 2026. Google's helpful content thinking and the AI engines both favour content that clearly comes from real experience. Write from what you actually know, answer the question fully, and cover the things only someone who has done the work would think to mention. Thin, generic copy that could sit on any site is what holds most Wix sites back. Depth and honesty win.

Do not skip technical SEO

Wix handles a lot for you, but you still need to check the basics. Make sure each page is set to index when it should be, that your important pages are in the sitemap, and that nothing important is hidden behind an interaction Google cannot reach. Compress your images before you upload them, give every meaningful image real alt text, and keep an eye on mobile, because most of your visitors and Google's crawl are mobile first.

Speed and Core Web Vitals

A slow Wix site loses rankings and visitors. Keep your pages light: size your images properly, do not stack heavy animations and third-party widgets on your key pages, and test your important pages honestly on mobile, not just desktop. Speed is one of the few technical factors Google names directly, and it is one you can control.

Structured data, for Google and for AI

Schema is how you spell out to machines exactly who you are and what a page is. I use a dual-layer approach: a standard schema.org layer that helps you in Google, plus an entity layer aimed at AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. Mark up your business, your pages, your FAQs and your reviews where they genuinely apply. Done well, this is what gets you quoted in an AI answer rather than skipped. My full walkthrough is here: structured data.

Show up in AI search, not just Google

More people are asking AI tools for recommendations instead of scrolling a results page. To be the site an AI engine cites, be clear about who you are and what you do, answer real questions in plain language, back it with first-hand detail, and mark it up with schema. The same honesty and depth that please Google are what get you pulled into an AI answer.

Local SEO, if you serve an area

If you work with customers in a particular place, say so clearly on the page, in your titles and in your schema, and keep your name, address and phone details consistent everywhere. Do not build a stack of near-identical pages for every town, because Google collapses thin location pages. One strong, genuinely local page beats a doorway set.

Avoid the common mistakes

The things that quietly hold Wix sites back are almost always the same: default titles left in place, several pages fighting over the same term, thin copy, missing alt text, and no schema. Fix those first. If your Wix site is not ranking, my page on why that happens walks through the usual culprits.

Wix SEO Best Practices FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the single most important Wix SEO best practice in 2026?

Genuinely useful, first-hand content. Wix handles a lot of the technical side, so the thing that separates sites that rank from sites that do not is depth and real experience on the page, not more keywords.

Does Wix hold you back for SEO?

No. A well-built Wix site can rank as well as any other, and I have spent 14 years proving it. The limits people hit are almost always the usual on-page mistakes, not Wix itself.

How do I set titles and meta descriptions in Wix?

In the Wix SEO panel for each page. Give every page its own title under 60 characters and its own description under 155, and never leave the Wix default in place.

Do I need schema on a Wix site?

Yes, where it genuinely applies. Schema helps Google understand your pages and, done as a dual-layer setup, helps AI engines like ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews quote you rather than skip you.

How is this different from your Wix SEO checklist?

This page is the thinking behind the practices. The checklist is the step-by-step action list. Use them together.
