Measuring AI Overview impressions and citations in Google Search Console
Module 64: AI Overviews (SGE) Optimisation for Wix | Lesson 663 of 687 | 24 min read

Google Search Console now provides specific data for AI Overview appearances, allowing Wix site owners to measure how often their content appears in AI Overviews and how many clicks those appearances generate. This data is separate from traditional organic search data and requires knowing where to look and how to interpret the metrics. This lesson covers the full measurement workflow.
Where to Find AI Overview Data in Google Search Console
In Google Search Console, AI Overview data is available in the Search Results performance report. Use the "Search type" filter and select "AI Overviews" if available in your account, or look for the AI Overviews appearance type in the "Search Appearance" filter. Google progressively rolls out these filters, so the exact location may vary depending on when your account gains access to the feature.
Alternatively, the overall Web search data reveals AI Overview impact indirectly. Queries where your page has high impressions but unusually low CTR (under 1 percent) often indicate that an AI Overview is answering the query and reducing the need for users to click through to your Wix page.
Key Metrics to Track for AI Overview Performance
- AI Overview impressions: how many times your Wix content was cited in an AI Overview
- AI Overview clicks: how many users clicked through to your page from an AI Overview citation
- AI Overview CTR: clicks divided by impressions — typically lower than traditional organic CTR
- Cannibilisation rate: queries where AI Overviews are reducing your organic click volume
- Citation coverage: the percentage of your target queries where you are cited versus competitors
- Position delta: whether your traditional organic ranking correlates with AI Overview citation frequency
Building an AI Overview Tracking Dashboard
Create a repeatable measurement process in Google Search Console
- Open GSC and navigate to Performance > Search Results.
- Set the date range to the last 90 days to get a statistically meaningful data set.
- Apply the Search Appearance filter and select AI Overviews (if available) to isolate AI Overview data.
- Export this data to Google Sheets or a CSV file.
- Create a separate tab for traditional organic data using the same date range and queries.
- Compare the two data sets: identify queries where you appear in traditional results but not AI Overviews, and vice versa.
- Build a simple table tracking: query, traditional rank, AI Overview cited (yes/no), impression volume, CTR.
- Repeat this export monthly to track changes and the impact of your content optimisation efforts.
Interpreting the Data: What Changes Should You Make
Once you have identified queries where you appear in traditional results but not AI Overviews, visit those queries in a browser and review the AI Overview that does appear. Identify which sites are cited. Analyse their page structure, content format, and the specific passages extracted. Then compare these to your own Wix page and identify the formatting or content gaps.
