Google AI Overviews (formerly Search Generative Experience) appear at the top of many search results pages, summarising answers from across the web before any traditional organic listings are shown. For Wix site owners, understanding how this system selects and cites sources is now a critical part of SEO strategy. Being cited in an AI Overview for a competitive query is increasingly valuable as click-through rates for traditional position-one results decline.
How Google AI Overviews Select Source Content
AI Overviews are generated by a large language model that analyses multiple high-quality sources in the Google index to synthesise an answer. The system does not simply pull one source; it aggregates content from several pages it considers authoritative and relevant. Your Wix page appears as a cited source when its content directly and clearly answers the query, is well-structured, and comes from a site with sufficient E-E-A-T signals.
Unlike traditional featured snippets which extract a single passage, AI Overviews may draw on different paragraphs from your page or combine your content with content from other sites. This means every section of your page is a potential citation candidate, not just the opening paragraphs.
What Makes Wix Content More Likely to be Cited
- Direct, concise answers to specific questions early in the page content
- Well-organised headings (H2, H3) that match natural language question patterns
- Content that covers a topic comprehensively rather than superficially
- Strong E-E-A-T signals: author bios, credentials, citations, and first-hand experience
- Structured data that helps Google understand the type of content and entities on the page
- Clear, jargon-free language that is easy for a language model to parse and summarise
- Content updated regularly to remain factually accurate and current
The Difference Between AI Overview Citations and Traditional Rankings
A page can be cited in an AI Overview without ranking in the top ten traditional organic results. Conversely, a page ranking number one may not be cited in the AI Overview. The two systems evaluate content differently. Traditional rankings weight authority, backlinks, and keyword relevance heavily. AI Overviews weight content clarity, directness of answer, and factual reliability more strongly. This creates an opportunity for newer Wix sites with excellent content to gain AI Overview visibility before they accumulate the backlink authority needed for traditional top rankings.
Monitoring AI Overview Citation in Google Search Console
How to track your AI Overview citation performance
- Open Google Search Console and go to the Search Results performance report.
- Apply a filter for "Search type: Web" and look for queries where your impressions are high but clicks are low — this pattern often indicates an AI Overview is absorbing the click.
- Use the "Compare" date range feature to track changes in CTR over time as AI Overviews rolled out more broadly.
- Look for queries where your page appears in the traditional results but not in the AI Overview source panel, these are your optimisation opportunities.
- Export query data to a spreadsheet and segment queries by those with high AI Overview presence (usually informational and how-to queries).
