Is Wix Bad for SEO? The Myths, and the Honest Answer for 2026

"Is Wix bad for SEO?" is one of the most common questions I am asked, and it usually comes from someone who has read an old blog post or been told by a developer that Wix simply cannot rank. It is asked just as often by businesses in the United States as in the UK, so let me answer it plainly for everyone before anything else: no, Wix is not bad for SEO. I have spent fourteen years working on Wix and nothing else, ranking Wix sites on the first page of Google for clients in the UK, the US and beyond, in some genuinely competitive niches. The idea that Wix holds you back is a myth. Like most myths it started with a grain of truth, so it is worth understanding where it came from and what is actually true today, wherever in the world you are searching from.

Where the myth came from

The belief that Wix is bad for SEO was not invented out of nothing. Go back to the early 2010s and it was, at that time, fair comment. Wix ran on older technology that leaned heavily on JavaScript and used awkward URL structures, and back then Google struggled to crawl and render that kind of site. Pages could be slow to index, or not indexed at all. For a few years the criticism was earned. The problem is that the reputation stuck long after the reason for it disappeared. Wix rebuilt its entire platform on a modern, search-friendly foundation years ago, but the internet has a long memory, and those old articles still rank for the question today, which keeps the myth alive.

What is actually true in 2026

Today Wix gives you the full set of SEO controls any serious website needs. You can edit every page title and meta description, set your own clean URL slugs, add canonical tags, create 301 redirects, control indexing with meta robots, edit your robots file, submit an XML sitemap to Google, and add structured data for rich results and AI answers. It renders your content so Google can see it, it produces proper semantic headings, and it connects straight to Google Search Console. There is very little a custom-built site can do for SEO that a Wix site cannot. Google itself has been clear on this for years: the platform you build on is not a ranking factor. What Google ranks is the quality and relevance of the page, not the name of the website builder behind it.

So why do some Wix sites rank badly?

This is the honest part, and it matters. Plenty of Wix sites do sit invisible on page five of Google, and when an owner sees that it is tempting to blame the platform. But in almost every site I have audited, the cause has nothing to do with Wix. It is thin content that does not answer what people are searching for, page titles that were never written for the terms customers actually type, no clear main heading, little or no internal linking, and no backlinks pointing at the site. A site with those problems would rank just as poorly on WordPress, Shopify or a hand-coded build. The builder is not the issue, the optimisation is. The fair criticisms, and they are minor

I will always be straight with you, so here are the honest caveats. For the vast majority of businesses that is a good deal.

Wix vs WordPress, the comparison behind the myth

A lot of "Wix is bad for SEO" advice really means "WordPress is better for SEO", and it tends to come from people who work in WordPress. The truth is more balanced. WordPress offers more plugins and deeper control, which suits developers and large publishers. Wix offers a cleaner, all-in-one experience where the SEO tools are built in rather than bolted on. Both can rank at the top of Google. The bottom line

Wix is not bad for SEO. It was, briefly, more than a decade ago, and that reputation has outlived the facts. A modern Wix site has everything it needs to rank, and when one does not rank, the fix is almost always better content, better keywords, better structure and some links, not a different platform.
