Donation page SEO: optimising for conversions and search
Module 37: SEO for Nonprofits & Charities on Wix | Lesson 431 of 687 | 44 min read

Your donation page is the most important page on your nonprofit Wix site from a revenue perspective. Yet most charity donation pages are poorly optimised for both search engines and conversions. This lesson covers how to structure, optimise and promote your donation page so it ranks in search results and converts visitors into donors at the highest possible rate.
Why Donation Pages Need SEO
Many nonprofits treat their donation page as a simple payment form and rely entirely on internal links and email campaigns to drive traffic to it. This misses a significant opportunity. People actively search for phrases like "donate to [cause]", "[charity name] donate" and "best [cause] charities to donate to". If your donation page is optimised for these terms, you capture donors at the exact moment they have decided to give.

Search data shows that donation-related keywords spike dramatically in November and December, with Giving Tuesday and year-end giving driving massive search volume. Nonprofits with well-optimised donation pages can capture thousands of pounds or dollars in additional gifts from search traffic alone during this period.
Donation Page URL and Title Tag Optimisation
- Use a clean, descriptive URL: yourcharity.org/donate rather than yourcharity.org/page-1 or a third-party form URL
- Title tag format: "Donate to [Charity Name] | Support [Cause] Today" (under 60 characters)
- Meta description: include the impact of donations, tax deductibility and a call to action (under 155 characters)
- H1 heading should reinforce the page purpose: "Make a Donation to [Charity Name]" or "Support [Cause] with Your Gift"
- Include your charity registration number on the page for trust and compliance
Structuring the Donation Page for SEO and Conversions
The best-performing donation pages balance SEO content with conversion optimisation. You need enough text for Google to understand what the page is about, but you cannot bury the donation form under walls of text. The key is to place your donation form prominently at the top, with supporting SEO content below.
Building your optimised donation page on Wix
- Place the donation form or prominent Donate button above the fold so visitors can act immediately
- Add a compelling headline and 1-2 sentences about the impact of donations directly above the form
- Include suggested donation amounts with impact statements: "$25 feeds a family for a week", "$100 provides school supplies for 10 children"
- Below the form, add 200-400 words of SEO-friendly content explaining your cause, your impact and why donations matter
- Include a testimonial or beneficiary story to build emotional connection and add unique content
- Add trust signals: charity registration number, financial transparency rating, security badges, "100% of donations go to programmes"
- Include FAQ schema markup answering common donor questions: "Is my donation tax-deductible?", "How is my donation used?"
- Add internal links to your impact reports, programme pages and annual financial statements
Donation Page Schema Markup
Adding DonateAction schema markup to your donation page helps Google understand the page purpose and may enable enhanced search features. This markup tells Google that your page accepts donations and provides details about your organisation.
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "DonateAction",
"name": "Donate to [Your Charity Name]",
"description": "Support [cause] by making a tax-deductible donation",
"recipient": {
"@type": "NGO",
"name": "[Your Charity Name]",
"url": "https://yourcharity.org",
"nonprofitStatus": "501c3"
},
"url": "https://yourcharity.org/donate"
}
Landing Pages for Specific Donation Campaigns
Beyond your main donation page, create campaign-specific landing pages for major fundraising initiatives. Each campaign page targets different keywords and serves different donor motivations. On Wix, you can duplicate your donation page template and customise it for each campaign.
- Year-end giving page: target "year-end charitable donations", "last-minute tax-deductible gifts", "end of year giving [cause]"
- Giving Tuesday page: target "Giving Tuesday [cause]", "Giving Tuesday best charities", "Giving Tuesday [year]"
- Emergency appeal page: target "[emergency] relief donations", "how to help [emergency]", "[emergency] aid charity"
- Monthly giving page: target "monthly donation [cause]", "recurring charity donation", "sustainer programme [charity]"
- Legacy giving page: target "leave a legacy to charity", "charitable bequest", "planned giving [cause]"
Optimising the Donation Form Itself
- Offer multiple payment methods: credit card, PayPal, bank transfer, Apple Pay, Google Pay
- Pre-select a middle donation amount (the second or third option typically gets the most selections)
- Include a monthly giving toggle prominently; monthly donors have 5x higher lifetime value
- Keep the form as short as possible: name, email, amount and payment details are the essentials
- Add Gift Aid capture for UK charities (adds 25 percent to every donation at no cost to the donor)
- Make the form mobile-responsive; over 50 percent of donation page visits come from mobile devices
- Use a single-page form rather than a multi-step process to reduce abandonment
