Nonprofit local SEO and community outreach on Wix
Module 37: SEO for Nonprofits & Charities on Wix | Lesson 436 of 687 | 46 min read
By Michael Andrews, Wix SEO Expert UK
Most nonprofits serve specific geographic communities, making local SEO one of the most impactful strategies available. When someone searches for "food bank near me", "free legal advice [city]" or "charity shop [area]", your Wix site needs to appear. This lesson covers the complete local SEO strategy for nonprofits, from Google Business Profile optimisation to local content creation and community link building.
Why Local SEO Is Critical for Nonprofits
Local search intent is extremely high-conversion for nonprofits. Someone searching for "homeless shelter [city]" may need immediate help. Someone searching for "donate clothes near me" is ready to act right now. Someone searching for "volunteer [city]" wants to get involved in their community. Local SEO puts your nonprofit in front of these people at exactly the right moment.

Google displays local results in the Map Pack (the top three results with a map) for searches with local intent. Appearing in the Map Pack dramatically increases visibility and clicks. For nonprofits, the Map Pack is especially important because it displays your address, phone number, hours, reviews and a direct link to your website.
Google Business Profile Optimisation for Nonprofits
Setting up and optimising your GBP listing
- Claim your Google Business Profile at business.google.com if you have not already
- Select the most accurate primary category: "Non-profit organisation", "Charity", "Food bank", "Animal shelter" or the most specific option available
- Add secondary categories for all relevant services: "Thrift store", "Community centre", "Social services organisation"
- Write a keyword-rich business description (750 characters) mentioning your cause, services, location and how people can help
- Add your complete address, phone number, website URL and operating hours
- Upload at least 10 high-quality photos: your building exterior, interior, team, events and beneficiaries (with consent)
- Add all services you offer with descriptions: "Emergency food parcels", "Housing advice", "Youth mentoring programme"
- Enable messaging and Q&A so potential supporters can contact you directly through Google
- Post weekly updates about events, volunteer needs, impact stories and fundraising campaigns
NAP Consistency for Nonprofits
NAP stands for Name, Address and Phone number. Google uses NAP consistency across the web to verify your organisation's legitimacy and location. Every mention of your nonprofit online should use the exact same name, address format and phone number. Inconsistencies confuse Google and hurt your local rankings.
- Decide on your official NAP format and document it: exact charity name, full address with postcode, primary phone number
- Audit all existing listings: Google Business Profile, social media profiles, charity directories, local council listings
- Correct any inconsistencies: "St. John's" vs "Saint John's", "Street" vs "St", missing suite numbers
- Ensure your Wix site footer displays your NAP exactly as it appears on Google Business Profile
- When registering on new directories or platforms, always copy your NAP from your documented master version
Local Content Strategy for Nonprofits
Creating content that is specifically relevant to your local community strengthens your local SEO signals and attracts the people you serve. Local content also earns links from local media, community blogs and partner organisations more easily than generic content.
- Write neighbourhood-specific service pages: "Free Meals in Hackney", "Youth Programmes in South Manchester", "Legal Aid in Brooklyn"
- Publish local impact reports: "How [Charity Name] Served [City] in 2024"
- Cover local events: write about community events you participate in, sponsor or organise
- Create local resource guides: "Complete Guide to Free Services in [City]" (linking to partner organisations)
- Feature local partnerships: write about collaborations with local businesses, councils and other charities
- Publish volunteer spotlight stories featuring local community members
Building Local Citations and Backlinks
Earning local links for your nonprofit Wix site
- Register with your local council's community directory and voluntary sector database
- List your organisation on local volunteer centres and community foundations
- Join your local Chamber of Commerce or voluntary sector network for a listing and backlink
- Build relationships with local journalists by providing expert commentary on issues related to your cause
- Submit event listings to local community calendars, newspapers and "what's on" websites
- Partner with local businesses for cause marketing campaigns and earn links from their websites
- Offer to write guest articles for local community blogs, parish newsletters and neighbourhood websites
- Participate in local awards programmes and ensure any coverage links back to your Wix site
Multi-Location Nonprofit SEO
If your nonprofit operates in multiple locations, create a separate Google Business Profile for each physical location and a dedicated location page on your Wix site for each. This ensures you appear in local results for each area you serve.
- Create location pages at yourcharity.org/locations/manchester, yourcharity.org/locations/birmingham, etc.
- Each location page should have unique content: local team, local services, local impact statistics, local hours
- Avoid duplicating content across location pages; write unique descriptions for each
- Embed a Google Map for each location on its respective page
- Add LocalBusiness schema markup to each location page with the specific address
- Link between location pages and your main programmes pages to distribute authority
Managing Reviews for Nonprofits
Google reviews significantly influence local rankings and trust. Nonprofits can ethically encourage reviews from volunteers, service users (where appropriate), event attendees and donors. Positive reviews that mention your services and location strengthen both your reputation and your local SEO signals.
