Verifying IndexNow is working on your Wix site
Module 63: IndexNow & Instant Indexing on Wix | Lesson 657 of 688 | 20 min read
By Michael Andrews, Wix SEO Expert UK
Knowing that Wix has implemented IndexNow is not the same as knowing it is working correctly for your specific site. This lesson covers how to verify that IndexNow submissions are occurring, how to check them in Bing Webmaster Tools, and how to diagnose common reasons why submissions might fail.
Checking the IndexNow Key File on Your Wix Site
How to verify your IndexNow setup and confirm submissions are working on Wix
- Open a browser and navigate to your Wix site's root domain (e.g. https://yoursite.com).
- Attempt to access the IndexNow key file by appending your API key followed by .txt to the domain — the URL format is yoursite.com/[api-key].txt.
- If you do not know your API key, log in to Bing Webmaster Tools at bingwebmastertools.com and navigate to your site settings to find the key associated with your domain.
- When you access the key file URL, it should display only your API key as plain text — no HTML, no other content.
- If the key file returns a 404 error, confirm that your Wix site is on a paid premium plan and that a custom domain is connected via Wix Dashboard > Settings > Domains.
- Alternatively, view the page source of any published Wix page (right-click > View Page Source) and search for "indexnow" to find any IndexNow-related meta tags or key references embedded by Wix.
- After confirming the key file is accessible, publish a new page or make a significant update to an existing page on your Wix site to trigger a fresh IndexNow submission.
- Wait 24-48 hours, then log in to Bing Webmaster Tools and navigate to Configure My Site > URL Submission to check whether the updated URL appears in the submission log.
- If the URL appears with a success status, IndexNow is fully operational on your Wix site. If it shows an error code, consult the BWT error documentation and contact Wix support if the key file is inaccessible.
Verifying Submissions in Bing Webmaster Tools
- Log into Bing Webmaster Tools at bingwebmastertools.com
- Navigate to Configure My Site > Submit URLs or look for the IndexNow report
- The URL submission report shows which URLs have been submitted and when
- A successful submission shows the URL, submission date, and a success status
- Failed submissions show an error code that indicates the problem
Common Reasons IndexNow Submissions Fail
- Key file not accessible: the key file URL returns 404 or is blocked by robots.txt
- Key file content mismatch: the key in the file does not match the key sent in the API request
- URL not on the same domain as the key: IndexNow requires submissions to be from the same domain as the key file
- Submitting noindex URLs: some search engines reject IndexNow submissions for pages with noindex meta tags
- Rate limiting: submitting too many URLs in a short period may result in rate limiting from search engines
How to Check Your Wix IndexNow Submissions in Bing Webmaster Tools
Follow these steps to connect Bing Webmaster Tools to your Wix site and use it to verify that IndexNow submissions from Wix are being received and processed by Bing.
Checking Wix IndexNow submissions using Bing Webmaster Tools
- Go to www.bing.com/webmasters and sign in with a Microsoft account — create one for free if you do not already have one.
- Click Add a Site and enter your Wix site's root domain URL (e.g. https://yoursite.com).
- Select the verification method — the meta tag option is the simplest for Wix.
- Copy the BWT verification meta tag and open the Wix Editor, then go to Settings > Custom Code and paste the meta tag in the Head section of all pages.
- Return to Bing Webmaster Tools and click Verify — BWT will confirm site ownership within a few minutes.
- Navigate to Sitemaps in BWT and submit your Wix sitemap URL (yoursite.com/sitemap.xml) to allow Bing to crawl your content structure.
- Publish a new page or update an existing page on your Wix site — this triggers Wix's automatic IndexNow submission.
- After 24-48 hours, navigate to Configure My Site > URL Submission in Bing Webmaster Tools and review the submission log for your recently published URL.
- A successful entry shows the URL, submission timestamp, and a success status — this confirms IndexNow is working correctly on your Wix premium plan.
- If the URL is not in the submission log after 48 hours, re-verify the IndexNow key file at yoursite.com/[api-key].txt and check that your Wix site is on a paid plan with a connected custom domain.
