Once a year, you need to step back from the weekly and monthly tactical work and evaluate your entire SEO strategy at a strategic level. The annual review is where you assess what worked, what did not, how the competitive landscape has changed, and what your priorities should be for the next 12 months. This is not a quick exercise. It is a thorough strategic review that sets the direction for your Wix site SEO efforts for the entire year ahead.
The Annual SEO Performance Review Framework
Your annual review should answer five fundamental questions: Did we achieve our SEO goals from last year? What drove our biggest wins? What caused our biggest losses? How has the competitive landscape changed? What should our priorities be for the next 12 months?
Annual performance review process
- Pull 12-month performance data from Google Search Console: total clicks, total impressions, average CTR and average position compared to the previous 12 months
- Pull 12-month organic traffic data from Google Analytics 4, broken down by month to visualise the annual trend
- Review every SEO goal you set at the beginning of the year and mark each as Achieved, Partially Achieved or Not Achieved
- For each goal achieved, document what specific actions contributed to the success
- For each goal not achieved, analyse why: was it unrealistic, was execution insufficient, or did external factors (algorithm updates, market changes) intervene?
- Calculate the business impact of SEO: organic traffic contribution to leads, sales, or enquiries for the year
- Identify your top 10 performing pages and keywords, these are your foundation for next year strategy
- Identify your top 10 underperforming pages and keywords, these need strategic decisions about investment or abandonment
Year-Over-Year Traffic and Ranking Trend Analysis
Year-over-year comparison is more meaningful than month-over-month because it accounts for seasonality. A page that gets more traffic in December than July might look like it is growing monthly, but only a year-over-year comparison tells you if December this year was better than December last year.
- Compare total organic traffic for this year vs last year: the headline growth or decline percentage
- Break down the comparison by quarter to identify which periods drove the most growth or loss
- Compare the number of keywords your Wix site ranks for on page one now vs 12 months ago
- Track your domain authority or domain rating trend over the year using a third-party tool
- Review the number of indexed pages in GSC now vs 12 months ago to measure content growth
- Analyse traffic by device (mobile vs desktop) to understand how your audience is shifting
- Review your most improved keywords and most declined keywords for strategic insights
Competitive Landscape Assessment and Gap Analysis
Your competitors do not stand still. The competitive landscape 12 months ago is not the competitive landscape today. New competitors may have entered the market, existing competitors may have invested heavily in SEO, and some competitors may have fallen behind. Understanding these shifts is essential for setting realistic goals.
Annual competitive analysis process
- Identify your current top 5 organic search competitors by searching your main keywords. Compare this list to last year: are there any new entrants?
- For each competitor, assess their content volume growth over the past year, how many new pages or blog posts did they publish?
- Review competitor domain authority changes over the year using a third-party tool
- Identify any keywords where competitors now outrank you that you previously dominated
- Identify keywords where you now outrank competitors to understand what worked
- Analyse competitor content strategies: are they investing in video, long-form guides, tools, or other content types you are not?
- Document the competitive gaps: topics or keywords where competitors rank but you have no content
- Assess the effort required to close each gap and prioritise based on business impact
Algorithm Update Impact Review
Google rolls out multiple core algorithm updates, helpful content updates, spam updates and other changes each year. Your annual review should assess how each major update affected your Wix site and what adjustments you need to make.
- List every confirmed Google algorithm update from the past 12 months with their approximate dates
- For each update, check your GSC data to see if there was a corresponding traffic change
- Identify any updates that positively or negatively affected your Wix site and document the impact
- Read Google official guidance on each update to understand what they were targeting
- Assess whether your current content and technical SEO practices align with Google stated quality standards
- Plan any strategic adjustments needed to align with the direction Google search is heading
Setting SEO Goals and KPIs for the Next 12 Months
Based on your performance review, competitive analysis and algorithm assessment, set specific, measurable SEO goals for the next year. Good SEO goals are specific (increase organic traffic by 40 percent), measurable (tracked via GSC and GA4), achievable (based on current trends and resources), relevant (aligned with business objectives), and time-bound (by end of next year).
Goal setting framework for Wix SEO
- Set a primary traffic goal: target organic traffic growth percentage based on realistic assessment of your market and resources
- Set keyword ranking goals: identify 10 to 20 specific keywords you want to achieve page one rankings for
- Set content goals: plan the number and type of new pages or blog posts you will publish
- Set technical goals: target Core Web Vitals scores and technical health benchmarks
- Set link building goals: target the number of new linking domains to acquire
- Set conversion goals: target an organic conversion rate improvement if you track conversions
- Document all goals in your SEO maintenance spreadsheet with specific metrics and deadlines
- Break annual goals into quarterly milestones to make them manageable and trackable
