Wix CMS Page Variants: One URL, Many Layouts

A page variant lets one dynamic page show a different layout for certain items, without creating a separate page or a second URL. For example, a directory of listings could show a different design for premium members than for standard ones, all from the same CMS collection. The variant inherits the original page's dataset, URL pattern, permissions and SEO settings, so you are only changing the visual design, not the data structure underneath.
From an SEO perspective, this matters because every variant shares the original page's URL pattern and metadata. You get design flexibility without splitting your data or spawning duplicate URLs. That keeps your indexable URLs clean and your link equity in one place, instead of scattering it across near-duplicate pages that compete with each other in search results.
What a Page Variant Is
A variant is an alternative layout attached to an existing dynamic item page. All variants of that page share one dataset, one URL pattern, one set of permissions, and one set of SEO settings. You decide which items get which layout using filter rules applied to your CMS collection fields. It is a way to serve different designs to different items while search engines still see a single, tidy page structure. The content on each URL is still unique because it comes from the CMS record, but the template wrapping that content can differ from item to item.
How to Create a Page Variant
How to create a page variant for a Wix dynamic page
- Open your Wix Studio editor.
- Click "Pages" on the left of the editor.
- Find the dynamic item page you want, click the "More Actions" icon next to it, and choose "Add page variant".
- Enter a "Variant name".
- Choose a starting point: "Duplicate original design" to copy the current layout, or "Start from scratch" for a blank page on the same dataset. Click "Continue".
- Set the filter rules: pick a "Field", pick a "Condition", then enter or select the value.
- Click "+ Add new rule" for any extra conditions. An item must match all rules to use the variant.
- Click "Add variant".
Rules, Limits and SEO Notes
The system routes each item to the right variant automatically. If an item matches more than one variant, the variant created first takes priority. Page variants are currently available in Wix Studio only, and only for dynamic item pages that use a dynamic variable in the URL. You cannot use reference, multi-reference or tags fields in variant filter rules.
From an SEO point of view, the key thing to remember is that variants share the original page's SEO settings and URL pattern. Use them for design differences, not to try to target different keywords — that still needs proper separate pages. Because variants do not create new URLs, they do not affect your sitemap, your hreflang setup, or your canonical tags. They are purely a presentation layer on top of the existing dynamic page architecture.
