AI Search and GEO on Wix

Optimising your Wix site for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI-powered search.

Questions & Answers

What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation), and how is it different from SEO?
GEO is the practice of getting your content mentioned and cited by AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews, rather than only ranking as a blue link. It overlaps heavily with good SEO: clear, well-structured, genuinely useful content is what both need. The difference is the goal. SEO aims to rank a page; GEO aims to be the source an AI quotes when it answers a question. In practice, most of GEO is doing the fundamentals well, being clear, accurate, and recognised as a credible source on your topic.

How do AI search engines decide which sources to cite?
They pull from a mix of the web content they can access, their training, and, for tools that browse live like Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews, the pages currently ranking for a query. In practice, the sources that get cited tend to be the ones that answer the question clearly and directly, come from a site the engine sees as credible on that topic, and are easy to extract a clean answer from. So the same things that earn trust and rankings in normal search, useful content and authority, are what get you quoted by AI. There is no separate trick.

Does adding schema markup get me cited by AI?
It helps in some places and not others, so be clear-eyed about it. Schema (structured data) genuinely helps you earn rich results in Google and can help some non-Google AI tools understand your content. What it does not do is act as a lever for Google's AI Overviews: Google has said structured data is not required to appear there. So add schema for the real benefits it gives, rich results and clarity for AI systems that use it, but do not expect it to be the thing that gets you into Google's AI answers. That comes from content and authority.

Do llms.txt or ai.txt files help with AI search?
Honestly, very little at the moment. llms.txt is a proposed file that lists your key content for AI crawlers, but it is not an official standard, Google ignores it, and most AI engines do not currently use it. It does no harm to add one, and a few non-Google tools may read it, but it is not a shortcut to AI visibility, and anyone selling it as one is overstating it. Your effort is far better spent on clear, credible content that AI engines actually pull from.

How do I write content that AI engines will quote?
Answer the question directly and early. AI engines like content that states the answer up front, then supports it, rather than burying it after a long introduction. Use clear headings that match how people ask questions, give a concise answer in the first sentence or two of each section, and keep your facts specific and accurate. Short paragraphs, plain language and a logical structure all make it easy for an AI to lift a clean, correct answer from your page. Write for a person who wants the answer fast, and the AI benefits too.

What is entity SEO, and why does it matter for AI and GEO?
An entity is a thing the search and AI systems recognise as a distinct, real subject: a business, a person, a place, a concept. Entity SEO is about making sure these systems clearly understand who you are and what you are known for, and connect you to the right topics. It matters for GEO because AI engines answer in terms of entities and relationships, so a brand they recognise and trust as a source on a subject is far more likely to be named. You build this with consistent information, clear on-page context, and links to authoritative references about you.

How do I get my Wix content cited in Google's AI Overviews?
There is no special switch for this, and that is the honest answer. Google's AI Overviews draw largely on content that already ranks well and answers the query clearly, so the path in is the same as strong SEO: genuinely useful, first-hand content on a technically sound site. Cover the topic thoroughly, answer the specific questions people ask, show real expertise and experience, and make sure the page is fast, crawlable and well structured. Schema and llms.txt are not the lever here. Quality, relevance and trust are.

How do I track whether AI engines are mentioning my brand?
You have to check deliberately, because AI mentions do not show up in normal analytics. Ask the main engines, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude, the kinds of questions your customers would, and see whether you are named or cited. Do it regularly, since answers change over time and differ between tools. You can also watch your server logs or analytics for AI crawler visits and for referral traffic from AI tools, which shows they are reading your site and sending people to you. Track it as a trend, not a one-off.
