Local event searches like "events in Birmingham this week" or "workshop near me" have strong commercial intent. Users searching these terms are actively looking for something to attend. Ranking in Google local event results requires a combination of event schema, local keyword targeting, Google Business Profile events posts, and a strong local authority foundation.
How Google Selects Events for the Events Carousel
Google populates its Events carousel using Event structured data from across the web. Sites with correctly implemented Event schema and strong domain authority are most likely to appear. Proximity to the searcher, event date relevance, and the match between the event description and the search query all influence which events appear.
Local Keyword Targeting for Event Pages
- Include the city or area name in the event page title and H1 heading
- Use location-specific phrases in the event description that match local searches
- Target "events in [city]" variations in the events listing page title and meta description
- Create category pages for recurring event types (e.g. "networking events in Manchester") targeting category-level queries
- Use the venue name and address in both visible content and schema markup for additional local relevance
Google Business Profile Events Posts
Adding events as Google Business Profile posts gives each event additional visibility in local search and on your GBP listing. Events posted on GBP appear with a clickable button linking to your Wix event page, driving qualified local traffic to your registration page. Always publish events simultaneously on your Wix site and as a GBP event post.
How to post an event on Google Business Profile and link to your Wix event page
- Log in to your Google Business Profile at business.google.com and select your business listing.
- Click the Posts option in the left-hand navigation panel.
- Select Event as the post type from the available post categories.
- Enter your event title, which should match the event name on your Wix event page for consistency.
- Set the event start and end dates and times to exactly match the details in your Wix Events page and schema markup.
- Add a compelling event description (up to 1500 characters) that includes relevant local keywords and a clear summary of what attendees will gain.
- Upload a high-quality event image (minimum 720x540 pixels) — the same hero image used on your Wix event page works well.
- Click Add a button, select Learn more or Book, and enter the full URL of your Wix event page as the destination.
- Click Publish and verify the post appears on your GBP listing in Google Maps and local search results.
- Share the GBP post URL on social media to drive additional engagement signals to the listing.
How to Optimise Wix Event Pages for Local Event Searches
Apply these steps to each Wix event page to maximise its visibility in local event search results and the Google Events carousel.
Optimising Wix event pages to rank for local event searches
- Go to Wix Dashboard > Events and open the event you want to optimise for local search.
- In the event description field, include the city or area name at least twice naturally — for example "Join us for this Birmingham networking event" — and add the venue name and full address in the visible event content.
- Click the SEO tab in the event editor and write a meta title that includes both the event topic and the city, for example "Digital Marketing Workshop Birmingham | [Your Brand]".
- Write a meta description that includes the event date, location, and a compelling reason to attend, keeping it under 155 characters.
- Open the Event schema for this page and confirm the location object includes name, streetAddress, addressLocality, postalCode, and addressRegion to maximise local relevance signals.
- Log in to your Google Business Profile at business.google.com and create an event post for this event — set the title and description to match your Wix event page for consistency.
- In the GBP event post, add a button linking directly to your Wix event page registration URL.
- After publishing, search for "[event type] [city]" in Google on a desktop browser to see whether your event appears in the Events carousel — if not, check schema validity and GBP post status.
- Create a category page in Wix for the event type (e.g. /events/workshops-birmingham) and add an internal link from it to this specific event page to build topical and local relevance.
- Monitor Google Search Console Performance for the event page URL in the 2-4 weeks before the event date — track impressions for local event queries and refine the meta title or description if CTR is low.
